Single correct option

In a potentiometer experiment a cell of emf EE balances at 300 cm300\ \mathrm{cm} of the wire. When the cell is connected across a 15 Ω15\ \Omega resistor, its terminal voltage balances at 250 cm250\ \mathrm{cm}. The internal resistance of the cell is
  1. A. 1.5 Ω1.5\ \Omega
  2. B. 5 Ω5\ \Omega
  3. C. 3 Ω3\ \Omega
  4. D. 6 Ω6\ \Omega
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 3 Ω3\ \Omega

The balance length is proportional to potential difference. The open-circuit emf corresponds to l1=300l_1=300 cm and the terminal voltage to l2=250l_2=250 cm. With V=ERR+rV=E\dfrac{R}{R+r} we get r=R(l1l2−1)=15(300250−1)=3 Ωr=R\left(\dfrac{l_1}{l_2}-1\right)=15\left(\dfrac{300}{250}-1\right)=3\ \Omega. The wire's potential gradient is not needed.
