Single correct option

31.6 g31.6\ \mathrm{g} of KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} (M=158M=158) is heated strongly until it decomposes completely into K2MnO4\mathrm{K_2MnO_4}, MnO2\mathrm{MnO_2} and O2\mathrm{O_2}. The solid manganate is then dissolved in water and acidified so that it disproportionates completely to MnO4−\mathrm{MnO_4^-} and MnO2\mathrm{MnO_2}. The mass of KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} regenerated is nearly
  1. A. 21.1 g21.1\ \mathrm{g}
  2. B. 15.8 g15.8\ \mathrm{g}
  3. C. 31.6 g31.6\ \mathrm{g}
  4. D. 10.5 g10.5\ \mathrm{g}

Answer: (D) 10.5 g10.5\ \mathrm{g}

31.6/158=0.20031.6/158=0.200 mol. Heating: 2KMnO4→K2MnO4+MnO2+O2\mathrm{2KMnO_4\to K_2MnO_4+MnO_2+O_2}, giving 0.1000.100 mol K2MnO4\mathrm{K_2MnO_4}. In acid, manganate(VI) disproportionates: 3MnO42−+4H+→2MnO4−+MnO2+2H2O\mathrm{3MnO_4^{2-}+4H^+\to2MnO_4^-+MnO_2+2H_2O}, so 33 mol manganate give 22 mol permanganate. Permanganate formed =0.100×2/3=0.0667=0.100\times2/3=0.0667 mol, mass =0.0667×158=10.5=0.0667\times158=10.5 g. Taking all manganate to permanganate would give 15.815.8 g, and 21.121.1 g results from applying the factor 2/32/3 to the original 31.631.6 g.
