Metal-refining method pairs is INCORRECTLY matched?

Single correct option

Which of the following metal-refining method pairs is INCORRECTLY matched?
  1. A. Copper - Mond process
  2. B. Nickel - Mond process
  3. C. Zirconium - van Arkel method
  4. D. Germanium - zone refining
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) Copper - Mond process

Mond process: impure Ni reacts with CO at ≈330\approx330-350 K350\ \mathrm{K} to form volatile Ni(CO)4\mathrm{Ni(CO)_4}, which decomposes at ≈450\approx450-470 K470\ \mathrm{K} to pure Ni. van Arkel: Zr/Ti are converted to volatile iodides and decomposed on a hot tungsten filament. Zone refining is used for ultra-pure semiconductors Ge, Si, Ga. Copper is not purified by Mond process (it does not form a volatile carbonyl); blister copper is refined by poling and electrolytic refining.
