Single correct option

In acidic medium, KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} oxidises FeC2O4\mathrm{FeC_2O_4} to Fe3+\mathrm{Fe^{3+}} and CO2\mathrm{CO_2}. The number of moles of KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} required to oxidise one mole of FeC2O4\mathrm{FeC_2O_4} is
  1. A. 0.20.2
  2. B. 0.60.6
  3. C. 1.01.0
  4. D. 1.671.67
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 0.60.6

Per mole of FeC2O4\mathrm{FeC_2O_4}: Fe2+→Fe3+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}\to Fe^{3+}} loses 1 e−1\ e^-, and C2O42−→2CO2\mathrm{C_2O_4^{2-}\to2CO_2} loses 2 e−2\ e^-, total 33 mol e−e^-. MnO4−→Mn2+\mathrm{MnO_4^-\to Mn^{2+}} gains 5 e−5\ e^- per mole. Moles of KMnO4=3/5=0.6\mathrm{KMnO_4}=3/5=0.6. Using only the oxalate (2/5 = 0.4) or only iron (0.2) is the common slip.
