Single correct option

In the Bessemer converter used for copper extraction from the matte (Cu2S\mathrm{Cu_2S} with FeS\mathrm{FeS}), silica is added mainly because
  1. A. it reduces Cu2O\mathrm{Cu_2O} to copper
  2. B. it oxidises Cu2S\mathrm{Cu_2S} to Cu2O\mathrm{Cu_2O}
  3. C. it combines with FeO\mathrm{FeO} formed on blowing air, giving FeSiO3\mathrm{FeSiO_3} slag
  4. D. it acts as a reducing agent for SO2\mathrm{SO_2}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) it combines with FeO\mathrm{FeO} formed on blowing air, giving FeSiO3\mathrm{FeSiO_3} slag

Blowing air through the molten matte oxidises FeS\mathrm{FeS} first to FeO\mathrm{FeO}. Silica (SiO2\mathrm{SiO_2}) is an acidic flux which combines with the basic oxide: FeO+SiO2→FeSiO3\mathrm{FeO+SiO_2\to FeSiO_3} (slag, floats on top and is removed). Then Cu2S\mathrm{Cu_2S} is partly oxidised to Cu2O\mathrm{Cu_2O}, and self-reduction 2Cu2O+Cu2S→6Cu+SO2\mathrm{2Cu_2O+Cu_2S\to6Cu+SO_2} gives blister copper.
