Single correct option

In acidic medium, the number of moles of KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} required to oxidise completely 11 mole of ferrous oxalate, FeC2O4\mathrm{FeC_2O_4}, is
  1. A. 0.20.2
  2. B. 0.40.4
  3. C. 0.60.6
  4. D. 1.01.0
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 0.60.6

Both ions are oxidised: Fe2+→Fe3+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}\to Fe^{3+}} loses 1 e−1\ e^- and C2O42−→2CO2\mathrm{C_2O_4^{2-}\to 2CO_2} loses 2 e−2\ e^-, so 33 equivalents per mole of FeC2O4\mathrm{FeC_2O_4}. MnO4−\mathrm{MnO_4^-} gains 5 e−5\ e^- in acid (Mn7+→Mn2+\mathrm{Mn^{7+}\to Mn^{2+}}). Moles of permanganate =3/5=0.6=3/5=0.6. Counting only oxalate gives 0.40.4, only iron 0.20.2.
