Single correct option

If y(x)y(x) satisfies x dydx+y=x3x\,\dfrac{dy}{dx}+y=x^3 and y(1)=1y(1)=1, then the value of y(2)y(2) is
  1. A. 52\frac52
  2. B. 33
  3. C. 138\frac{13}{8}
  4. D. 198\frac{19}{8}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 198\frac{19}{8}

Write it as dydx+yx=x2\frac{dy}{dx}+\frac yx=x^2, linear with integrating factor e∫dx/x=xe^{\int dx/x}=x. Then ddx(xy)=x3\frac{d}{dx}(xy)=x^3, so xy=x44+cxy=\frac{x^4}{4}+c. From y(1)=1y(1)=1: 1=14+c1=\frac14+c, so c=34c=\frac34. Thus y=x34+34xy=\frac{x^3}{4}+\frac{3}{4x} and y(2)=2+38=198y(2)=2+\frac38=\frac{19}{8}.
