Single correct option

A series circuit has a resistor of 30 Ω30\ \Omega, an inductor of reactance 80 Ω80\ \Omega and a capacitor of reactance 40 Ω40\ \Omega across a 100 V100\ \mathrm{V} (rms) ac source. A second capacitor of reactance 40 Ω40\ \Omega is now added in series. The ratio of the average power consumed after the change to that before is
  1. A. 925\dfrac{9}{25}
  2. B. 53\dfrac{5}{3}
  3. C. 259\dfrac{25}{9}
  4. D. 103\dfrac{10}{3}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 259\dfrac{25}{9}

Initially Z1=302+(80−40)2=50 ΩZ_1=\sqrt{30^2+(80-40)^2}=50\ \Omega and P1=V2RZ2=104×302500=120 WP_1=\dfrac{V^2R}{Z^2}=\dfrac{10^4\times30}{2500}=120\ \mathrm{W}. Capacitors in series have reactances that add, so the net capacitive reactance becomes 80 Ω80\ \Omega, equal to XLX_L. The circuit is now at resonance with Z2=R=30 ΩZ_2=R=30\ \Omega and P2=V2R=10430=333.3 WP_2=\dfrac{V^2}{R}=\dfrac{10^4}{30}=333.3\ \mathrm{W}. The ratio is 333.3120=259\dfrac{333.3}{120}=\dfrac{25}{9}. Equivalently P∝RZ2P\propto \dfrac{R}{Z^2} gives (50/30)21\dfrac{(50/30)^2}{1}.
