Single correct option

A series circuit has a resistor of 30 Ω30\ \Omega, an inductor of 80 mH80\ \mathrm{mH} and a capacitor of 25 μF25\ \mu\mathrm{F}, driven by a 200 V200\ \mathrm{V} (rms) source of angular frequency 1000 rad s−11000\ \mathrm{rad\,s^{-1}}. The average power dissipated in the circuit is
  1. A. 480 W480\ \mathrm{W}
  2. B. 800 W800\ \mathrm{W}
  3. C. 1333 W1333\ \mathrm{W}
  4. D. 1280 W1280\ \mathrm{W}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 480 W480\ \mathrm{W}

Reactances: XL=ωL=1000×0.08=80 ΩX_L=\omega L=1000\times0.08=80\ \Omega and XC=1ωC=11000×25×10−6=40 ΩX_C=\dfrac1{\omega C}=\dfrac{1}{1000\times25\times10^{-6}}=40\ \Omega. Impedance Z=302+(80−40)2=50 ΩZ=\sqrt{30^2+(80-40)^2}=50\ \Omega. The rms current is I=20050=4 AI=\dfrac{200}{50}=4\ \mathrm{A}. Only the resistor dissipates power: P=I2R=16×30=480 WP=I^2R=16\times30=480\ \mathrm{W} (equivalently VIcos⁡ϕ=200×4×0.6VI\cos\phi=200\times4\times0.6). The value V2/R=1333 WV^2/R=1333\ \mathrm{W} ignores the reactance, and VI=800 WVI=800\ \mathrm{W} is the apparent power.
