Single correct option

A coil of self-inductance 0.5 H0.5\ \mathrm{H} and resistance 10 Ω10\ \Omega is connected across a 20 V20\ \mathrm{V} battery of negligible internal resistance at t=0t=0. The time at which the energy stored in the coil is one quarter of its final (maximum) value is
  1. A. 34.7 ms34.7\ \mathrm{ms}
  2. B. 50.0 ms50.0\ \mathrm{ms}
  3. C. 69.3 ms69.3\ \mathrm{ms}
  4. D. 25.0 ms25.0\ \mathrm{ms}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 34.7 ms34.7\ \mathrm{ms}

The current grows as I=I0(1−e−t/τ)I=I_0(1-e^{-t/\tau}) with I0=2010=2 AI_0=\dfrac{20}{10}=2\ \mathrm{A} and τ=LR=0.510=50 ms\tau=\dfrac LR=\dfrac{0.5}{10}=50\ \mathrm{ms}. Stored energy is 12LI2\tfrac12LI^2, so one quarter of the maximum means I=12I0I=\tfrac12I_0 (not 14I0\tfrac14I_0). Then 1−e−t/τ=121-e^{-t/\tau}=\tfrac12, i.e. e−t/τ=12e^{-t/\tau}=\tfrac12 and t=τln⁡2=50×0.693=34.7 mst=\tau\ln2=50\times0.693=34.7\ \mathrm{ms}. Taking the current to be one quarter of its maximum would give τln⁡43=14.4 ms\tau\ln\tfrac43=14.4\ \mathrm{ms}.
