Single correct option

A series circuit contains a resistor R=30 ΩR=30\ \Omega, an inductor and a capacitor, driven by a 150 V150\ \mathrm{V} (rms) source. At the source frequency the inductive reactance is 40 Ω40\ \Omega and the capacitive reactance is 80 Ω80\ \Omega. If the frequency is varied until the current is maximum, the average power dissipated becomes
  1. A. 270 W270\ \mathrm{W}
  2. B. 450 W450\ \mathrm{W}
  3. C. 750 W750\ \mathrm{W}
  4. D. 1500 W1500\ \mathrm{W}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 750 W750\ \mathrm{W}

At the given frequency Z=302+402=50 ΩZ=\sqrt{30^2+40^2}=50\ \Omega, so I=3 AI=3\ \mathrm{A} and P=I2R=270 WP=I^2R=270\ \mathrm{W} (this is the trap option). At resonance XL=XCX_L=X_C, so Z=R=30 ΩZ=R=30\ \Omega and I=150/30=5 AI=150/30=5\ \mathrm{A}. Then P=I2R=25×30=750 WP=I^2R=25\times30=750\ \mathrm{W}.
