Single correct option

A 100 V100\ \mathrm{V} (rms) source of angular frequency 400 rad s−1400\ \mathrm{rad\,s^{-1}} drives a series circuit of a 30 Ω30\ \Omega resistor, an ideal inductor of 0.2 H0.2\ \mathrm{H} and a capacitor of 62.5 μF62.5\ \mu\mathrm{F}. The average power dissipated in the circuit is
  1. A. 120 W120\ \mathrm{W}
  2. B. 200 W200\ \mathrm{W}
  3. C. 333 W333\ \mathrm{W}
  4. D. 60 W60\ \mathrm{W}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 120 W120\ \mathrm{W}

XL=ωL=80 ΩX_L=\omega L=80\ \Omega and XC=1ωC=1400×62.5×10−6=40 ΩX_C=\dfrac1{\omega C}=\dfrac{1}{400\times62.5\times10^{-6}}=40\ \Omega. Impedance Z=302+(80−40)2=50 ΩZ=\sqrt{30^2+(80-40)^2}=50\ \Omega. Irms=100/50=2 AI_{rms}=100/50=2\ \mathrm{A} and the power is dissipated only in the resistor: P=Irms2R=4×30=120 WP=I_{rms}^2R=4\times30=120\ \mathrm{W} (equivalently VIcos⁡ϕ=100×2×0.6VI\cos\phi=100\times2\times0.6). V2/R=333 WV^2/R=333\ \mathrm{W} would be the value only at resonance.
