Single correct option

In a series LCR circuit driven by an AC source of frequency 5015 Hz50\sqrt{15}\ \mathrm{Hz}, three ideal voltmeters read 160 V160\ \mathrm{V} across the resistor, 300 V300\ \mathrm{V} across the inductor and 180 V180\ \mathrm{V} across the capacitor. The resonant frequency of the circuit is
  1. A. 90 Hz90\ \mathrm{Hz}
  2. B. 150 Hz150\ \mathrm{Hz}
  3. C. 250 Hz250\ \mathrm{Hz}
  4. D. 300 Hz300\ \mathrm{Hz}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 150 Hz150\ \mathrm{Hz}

With the same current in all elements, the voltage ratio equals the reactance ratio: XCXL=180300=35\dfrac{X_C}{X_L} = \dfrac{180}{300} = \dfrac35. Now XL=ωLX_L=\omega L and XC=1/ωCX_C = 1/\omega C, so XCXL=1ω2LC=ω02ω2\dfrac{X_C}{X_L} = \dfrac{1}{\omega^2 LC} = \dfrac{\omega_0^2}{\omega^2}. Hence f0f=35\dfrac{f_0}{f} = \sqrt{\dfrac35} and f0=5015×35=509=150 Hzf_0 = 50\sqrt{15}\times\sqrt{\dfrac{3}{5}} = 50\sqrt{9} = 150\ \mathrm{Hz}. The resistor reading 160 V160\ \mathrm{V} is not needed for this ratio.
