Single correct option

A non-conducting solid sphere of radius RR carries a volume charge density ρ=ρ0rR\rho=\rho_0\dfrac{r}{R} at distance rr from its centre. If E1E_1 and E2E_2 are the magnitudes of the electric field at distances R2\dfrac R2 and 3R2\dfrac{3R}{2} from the centre, then E1E2\dfrac{E_1}{E_2} is
  1. A. 14\dfrac14
  2. B. 38\dfrac38
  3. C. 916\dfrac{9}{16}
  4. D. 11

Answer: (C) 916\dfrac{9}{16}

Charge within radius r≤Rr\le R: q(r)=∫0rρ0r′R4πr′2dr′=πρ0r4Rq(r)=\int_0^r\rho_0\frac{r'}{R}4\pi r'^2dr'=\dfrac{\pi\rho_0r^{4}}{R}. By Gauss's law E=q4πε0r2=ρ0r24ε0RE=\dfrac{q}{4\pi\varepsilon_0r^{2}}=\dfrac{\rho_0r^{2}}{4\varepsilon_0R}, so E1=ρ0R16ε0E_1=\dfrac{\rho_0R}{16\varepsilon_0}. Outside, the total charge is πρ0R3\pi\rho_0R^{3}, so E=ρ0R34ε0r2E=\dfrac{\rho_0R^{3}}{4\varepsilon_0r^{2}} and E2=ρ0R34ε0⋅49R2=ρ0R9ε0E_2=\dfrac{\rho_0R^{3}}{4\varepsilon_0}\cdot\dfrac{4}{9R^{2}}=\dfrac{\rho_0R}{9\varepsilon_0}. Ratio =1/161/9=916=\dfrac{1/16}{1/9}=\dfrac9{16}.
