Single correct option

A non-conducting sphere of radius RR carries a volume charge density ρ=ρ0 r/R\rho = \rho_0\, r/R (where rr is the distance from the centre) for r≤Rr \le R, and there is no other charge. If E1E_1 is the electric field magnitude at r=R/2r = R/2 and E2E_2 the magnitude at r=2Rr = 2R, then E1/E2E_1/E_2 equals
  1. A. 11
  2. B. 12\dfrac12
  3. C. 22
  4. D. 44

Answer: (A) 11

Enclosed charge inside radius r≤Rr \le R: q(r)=∫0r4πr′2 ρ0r′Rdr′=πρ0r4Rq(r) = \int_0^r 4\pi r'^2\,\rho_0\frac{r'}{R}dr' = \dfrac{\pi\rho_0 r^4}{R}. Gauss's law: E(r)=q4πε0r2=ρ0r24ε0RE(r) = \dfrac{q}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 r^2} = \dfrac{\rho_0 r^2}{4\varepsilon_0 R}, so E1=ρ0R16ε0E_1 = \dfrac{\rho_0 R}{16\varepsilon_0}. Total charge Q=πρ0R3Q = \pi\rho_0R^3, so E2=Q4πε0(2R)2=ρ0R16ε0E_2 = \dfrac{Q}{4\pi\varepsilon_0 (2R)^2} = \dfrac{\rho_0 R}{16\varepsilon_0}. The ratio is 11.
