Single correct option

A planet of mass MM and radius RR has no atmosphere. A body is projected radially upward from its surface with a speed equal to the speed of a satellite in a circular orbit grazing the surface. The maximum height above the surface reached by the body is
  1. A. RR
  2. B. R2\dfrac{R}{2}
  3. C. 3R3R
  4. D. 2R2R
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) RR

The grazing-orbit speed is v=GM/Rv=\sqrt{GM/R}. Energy conservation between the surface and the highest point at distance rr from the centre: 12v2−GMR=−GMr\tfrac12v^2-\dfrac{GM}{R}=-\dfrac{GM}{r}. Substituting, GM2R−GMR=−GM2R=−GMr\dfrac{GM}{2R}-\dfrac{GM}{R}=-\dfrac{GM}{2R}=-\dfrac{GM}{r}, so r=2Rr=2R and the height above the surface is r−R=Rr-R=R. The option R/2R/2 comes from the constant-gg formula h=v2/2gh=v^2/2g, which is invalid for such large heights.
