Single correct option

The value of ∫−11x21+ex dx\displaystyle\int_{-1}^{1}\dfrac{x^2}{1+e^{x}}\,dx is
  1. A. 23\dfrac23
  2. B. 12\dfrac12
  3. C. 13\dfrac13
  4. D. 00
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 13\dfrac13

Let I=∫−11x21+exdxI=\int_{-1}^1\frac{x^2}{1+e^x}dx. Replacing xx by −x-x gives I=∫−11x2ex1+exdxI=\int_{-1}^1\frac{x^2e^x}{1+e^x}dx. Adding the two forms, 2I=∫−11x2 1+ex1+exdx=∫−11x2dx=232I=\int_{-1}^1x^2\,\frac{1+e^x}{1+e^x}dx=\int_{-1}^1x^2dx=\dfrac23. Therefore I=13I=\dfrac13. The integrand is neither even nor odd, so the symmetry has to be used in this paired form.
