Single correct option

A boat can be rowed at 5 m s−15\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} in still water across a river of width 200 m200\ \mathrm{m} flowing at 3 m s−13\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. The time taken to cross by the path of shortest distance exceeds the least possible crossing time by
  1. A. 25 s25\ \mathrm{s}
  2. B. 10 s10\ \mathrm{s}
  3. C. 5 s5\ \mathrm{s}
  4. D. 15 s15\ \mathrm{s}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 10 s10\ \mathrm{s}

Least time: head perpendicular to the banks, so the time is 2005=40 s\dfrac{200}{5}=40\ \mathrm{s} (the current only carries the boat downstream by 120 m120\ \mathrm{m}). Shortest path: the boat must point upstream at angle θ\theta with sin⁡θ=35\sin\theta=\dfrac35 so that the downstream drift cancels; the cross-stream speed is then 52−32=4 m s−1\sqrt{5^2-3^2}=4\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} and the time is 2004=50 s\dfrac{200}{4}=50\ \mathrm{s}. The difference is 50−40=10 s50-40=10\ \mathrm{s}. Using 5 m s−15\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} as cross speed in both cases would give zero difference.
