Single correct option

A small ball of mass mm moves in a vertical circle at the end of a light inextensible string of length LL. At the highest point the tension in the string is 2mg2mg. The tension in the string at the instant it is horizontal is
  1. A. 3mg3mg
  2. B. 5mg5mg
  3. C. 6mg6mg
  4. D. 8mg8mg
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 5mg5mg

At the top, T+mg=mvt2/LT+mg = mv_t^2/L with T=2mgT=2mg, so vt2=3gLv_t^2 = 3gL. Moving from the top down to the horizontal position the ball falls through LL, so by energy conservation vh2=vt2+2gL=5gLv_h^2 = v_t^2 + 2gL = 5gL. At the horizontal position gravity is tangential, so the string tension alone supplies the centripetal force: T=mvh2/L=5mgT = mv_h^2/L = 5mg. The value 8mg8mg is the tension at the lowest point, and 6mg6mg would come from adding mgmg wrongly at the horizontal position.
