Single correct option

A closed loop carrying I=5 AI=5\ \mathrm{A} is made of two concentric semicircular arcs of radii 10 cm10\ \mathrm{cm} and 20 cm20\ \mathrm{cm}, both centred at OO and lying on the same side of the line through OO, joined at their ends by straight radial segments. The magnitude of the magnetic field at OO is
  1. A. 7.5π μT7.5\pi\ \mu\mathrm{T}
  2. B. 15π μT15\pi\ \mu\mathrm{T}
  3. C. 5π μT5\pi\ \mu\mathrm{T}
  4. D. 2.5π μT2.5\pi\ \mu\mathrm{T}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 2.5π μT2.5\pi\ \mu\mathrm{T}

The radial segments pass through OO and give no field. A semicircular arc of radius rr gives B=μ0I4rB=\dfrac{\mu_0I}{4r}. Going round the closed loop, the two arcs circulate in opposite senses about OO, so the fields subtract: B=μ0I4(10.1−10.2)=4π×10−7×54×5=2.5π×10−6 TB=\dfrac{\mu_0I}{4}\left(\dfrac1{0.1}-\dfrac1{0.2}\right)=\dfrac{4\pi\times10^{-7}\times5}{4}\times5=2.5\pi\times10^{-6}\ \mathrm{T}. Adding them gives the 7.5π μT7.5\pi\ \mu\mathrm{T} trap.
