Single correct option

A coil of inductance LL and resistance RR is connected at t=0t=0 across an ideal battery. The time at which the energy stored in its magnetic field becomes half of its final (maximum) value is
  1. A. LRln⁡2\dfrac{L}{R}\ln 2
  2. B. LRln⁡(2+2)\dfrac{L}{R}\ln\left(2+\sqrt{2}\right)
  3. C. LRln⁡(1+2)\dfrac{L}{R}\ln\left(1+\sqrt{2}\right)
  4. D. L2Rln⁡2\dfrac{L}{2R}\ln 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) LRln⁡(2+2)\dfrac{L}{R}\ln\left(2+\sqrt{2}\right)

Current grows as I=I0(1−e−t/τ)I = I_0\left(1-e^{-t/\tau}\right) with τ=L/R\tau = L/R. Energy 12LI2\tfrac12 LI^2 equals half of its final value 12LI02\tfrac12LI_0^2 when I=I0/2I = I_0/\sqrt2. Thus 1−e−t/τ=121 - e^{-t/\tau} = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt2}, so e−t/τ=1−12e^{-t/\tau} = 1-\dfrac{1}{\sqrt2} and et/τ=22−1=2(2+1)=2+2e^{t/\tau} = \dfrac{\sqrt2}{\sqrt2-1} = \sqrt2(\sqrt2+1) = 2+\sqrt2. Therefore t=LRln⁡(2+2)≈1.23 LRt = \dfrac{L}{R}\ln\left(2+\sqrt2\right)\approx1.23\,\dfrac{L}{R}. Choosing ln⁡2\ln 2 wrongly assumes the current, not the energy, is halved.
