Single correct option

A 2.000 g2.000\ \mathrm{g} mixture of CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3} and MgCO3\mathrm{MgCO_3} is strongly heated until only the oxides remain; the residue weighs 1.036 g1.036\ \mathrm{g}. Taking molar masses CaCO3=100\mathrm{CaCO_3}=100, MgCO3=84\mathrm{MgCO_3}=84, CaO=56\mathrm{CaO}=56, MgO=40 g mol−1\mathrm{MgO}=40\ \mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}, the mass percentage of CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3} in the mixture is closest to
  1. A. 25%25\%
  2. B. 40%40\%
  3. C. 50%50\%
  4. D. 60%60\%
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 50%50\%

Let xx g be CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3}. Residue =56100x+4084(2−x)=1.036=\frac{56}{100}x+\frac{40}{84}(2-x)=1.036. So 0.56x+0.9524−0.4762x=1.0360.56x+0.9524-0.4762x=1.036, giving 0.0838x=0.08360.0838x=0.0836 and x≈1.00x\approx 1.00 g. Hence CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3} is 1.00/2.000×100=50%1.00/2.000\times100=50\%. Shortcut: if the sample were pure MgCO3\mathrm{MgCO_3} the residue would be 0.9520.952 g and pure CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3} 1.121.12 g; 1.0361.036 lies exactly midway, so the mixture is about 1:1 by mass.
