Single correct option

Hard water contains 81 mg81\ \mathrm{mg} of Ca(HCO3)2\mathrm{Ca(HCO_3)_2} (M =162=162) and 73 mg73\ \mathrm{mg} of Mg(HCO3)2\mathrm{Mg(HCO_3)_2} (M =146=146) per litre. Using Clark's method, with Ca(OH)2\mathrm{Ca(OH)_2} (M =74=74) precipitating CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3} and Mg(OH)2\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2}, the mass of slaked lime needed to soften 1000 L1000\ \mathrm{L} of this water is
  1. A. 37 g37\ \mathrm{g}
  2. B. 111 g111\ \mathrm{g}
  3. C. 74 g74\ \mathrm{g}
  4. D. 148 g148\ \mathrm{g}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 111 g111\ \mathrm{g}

Per litre: Ca(HCO3)2=0.5\mathrm{Ca(HCO_3)_2} = 0.5 mmol and Mg(HCO3)2=0.5\mathrm{Mg(HCO_3)_2} = 0.5 mmol. Ca(HCO3)2+Ca(OH)2→2CaCO3+2H2O\mathrm{Ca(HCO_3)_2 + Ca(OH)_2 \to 2CaCO_3 + 2H_2O} needs 11 lime per formula unit, so 0.50.5 mmol. Mg(HCO3)2+2Ca(OH)2→Mg(OH)2+2CaCO3+2H2O\mathrm{Mg(HCO_3)_2 + 2Ca(OH)_2 \to Mg(OH)_2 + 2CaCO_3 + 2H_2O} needs 22 lime, so 1.01.0 mmol. Total lime =1.5=1.5 mmol/L =1.5×74=111=1.5\times74 = 111 mg/L, hence 111 g111\ \mathrm{g} per 1000 L1000\ \mathrm{L}. Counting only one lime per salt gives 74 g74\ \mathrm{g}.
