Single correct option

One mole of LiNO3\mathrm{LiNO_3} and one mole of NaNO3\mathrm{NaNO_3} are heated strongly in two separate vessels until decomposition is complete. The ratio of moles of O2\mathrm{O_2} evolved from LiNO3\mathrm{LiNO_3} to that from NaNO3\mathrm{NaNO_3} is
  1. A. 1:11:1
  2. B. 2:12:1
  3. C. 1:41:4
  4. D. 1:21:2

Answer: (D) 1:21:2

Lithium nitrate decomposes like the nitrates of heavy metals: 4LiNO3→2Li2O+4NO2+O2\mathrm{4LiNO_3\to2Li_2O+4NO_2+O_2}, so 11 mol gives 0.250.25 mol O2\mathrm{O_2}. Sodium nitrate gives the nitrite: 2NaNO3→2NaNO2+O2\mathrm{2NaNO_3\to2NaNO_2+O_2}, so 11 mol gives 0.50.5 mol O2\mathrm{O_2}. Ratio =0.25:0.5=1:2=0.25:0.5=1:2. The small Li+\mathrm{Li^+} has high polarising power and stabilises O2−\mathrm{O^{2-}}.
