Single correct option

In a Zener-diode voltage regulator, the Zener breakdown voltage is 6 V6\ \mathrm{V}, the unregulated input is 15 V15\ \mathrm{V}, the series resistor is 200 Ω200\ \Omega and the load resistor is 1 kΩ1\ \mathrm{k\Omega} connected across the diode. The current through the Zener diode is
  1. A. 75 mA75\ \mathrm{mA}
  2. B. 39 mA39\ \mathrm{mA}
  3. C. 6 mA6\ \mathrm{mA}
  4. D. 45 mA45\ \mathrm{mA}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 39 mA39\ \mathrm{mA}

The Zener holds the voltage across the load at 6 V6\ \mathrm{V}. Current through the series resistor: I=15−6200=45 mAI=\dfrac{15-6}{200}=45\ \mathrm{mA}. Load current: IL=61000=6 mAI_L=\dfrac{6}{1000}=6\ \mathrm{mA}. By Kirchhoff's current law the diode carries IZ=45−6=39 mAI_Z=45-6=39\ \mathrm{mA}. Choosing 4545 mA ignores the load; 7575 mA would use 15/20015/200.
