Single correct option

An arithmetic progression has first term 22 and non-zero common difference, and the ratio S2nSn\dfrac{S_{2n}}{S_n} of the sum of its first 2n2n terms to that of its first nn terms is the same for every positive integer nn. The 10th10^{\text{th}} term of the progression is
  1. A. 3838
  2. B. 4242
  3. C. 2020
  4. D. 3636

Answer: (A) 3838

For first term 22 and common difference dd, Sn=n2 (4+(n−1)d)S_n=\dfrac n2\,(4+(n-1)d). With k=4−dk=4-d this gives S2nSn=2 (2nd+k)nd+k=4−2knd+k\dfrac{S_{2n}}{S_n}=\dfrac{2\,(2nd+k)}{nd+k}=4-\dfrac{2k}{nd+k}. Since d≠0d\ne0, the term 2knd+k\dfrac{2k}{nd+k} changes with nn unless k=0k=0. So 4−d=04-d=0, i.e. d=4d=4, and then Sn=2n2S_n=2n^2 with ratio 44 for every nn. Therefore a10=2+9⋅4=38a_{10}=2+9\cdot4=38. As a check, the first few terms are 2,6,10,14,…2,6,10,14,\ldots and S1=2S_1=2, S2=8S_2=8, S4=32S_4=32, so S2/S1=S4/S2=4S_2/S_1=S_4/S_2=4, consistent with the constant ratio.
