Single correct option

The sum of the infinite series 13+332+533+734+⋯\dfrac13+\dfrac33^2+\dfrac53^3+\dfrac73^4+\cdots is
  1. A. 32\dfrac32
  2. B. 23\dfrac23
  3. C. 12\dfrac12
  4. D. 11
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 11

The series is an arithmetico-geometric one with general term 2n−13n\dfrac{2n-1}{3^n}. Let S=13+332+533+⋯S=\dfrac13+\dfrac{3}{3^2}+\dfrac{5}{3^3}+\cdots. Then S3=132+333+⋯\dfrac S3=\dfrac{1}{3^2}+\dfrac{3}{3^3}+\cdots. Subtracting, 2S3=13+2(132+133+⋯ )=13+2⋅1/91−1/3=13+13=23.\frac{2S}{3}=\frac13+2\left(\frac1{3^2}+\frac1{3^3}+\cdots\right)=\frac13+2\cdot\frac{1/9}{1-1/3}=\frac13+\frac13=\frac23. Hence S=1S=1. As a check, the partial sums 0.333, 0.556, 0.704,…0.333,\,0.556,\,0.704,\ldots climb steadily towards 11. The same value follows from ∑nxn=x(1−x)2\sum nx^n=\dfrac{x}{(1-x)^2} at x=13x=\dfrac13.
