Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 2041\dfrac{20}{41}

The general term is 1(2k−1)(2k+1)\dfrac{1}{(2k-1)(2k+1)}. Use partial fractions: 1(2k−1)(2k+1)=12(12k−1−12k+1)\dfrac{1}{(2k-1)(2k+1)}=\dfrac12\left(\dfrac{1}{2k-1}-\dfrac{1}{2k+1}\right). Summing from k=1k=1 to nn, the middle terms cancel (telescoping) and Sn=12(1−12n+1)=n2n+1S_n=\dfrac12\left(1-\dfrac{1}{2n+1}\right)=\dfrac{n}{2n+1}. For n=20n=20 this gives S20=2041S_{20}=\dfrac{20}{41}. The tempting wrong answers come from using n−1=19n-1=19 terms (1939\tfrac{19}{39}), the wrong number of terms (1021\tfrac{10}{21} is the sum of 1010 terms) or forgetting the factor 12\tfrac12 (4041\tfrac{40}{41}). Check with n=1n=1: 13\tfrac13, matching the first term.
