Single correct option

Two identical sonometer wires, stretched with equal tensions, are in unison. The tension in one wire is then increased by 4%4\% and 44 beats per second are heard. The original fundamental frequency of each wire is nearly
  1. A. 200 Hz200\ \mathrm{Hz}
  2. B. 100 Hz100\ \mathrm{Hz}
  3. C. 400 Hz400\ \mathrm{Hz}
  4. D. 800 Hz800\ \mathrm{Hz}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 200 Hz200\ \mathrm{Hz}

The fundamental frequency of a stretched wire is f=12LT/μf = \dfrac{1}{2L}\sqrt{T/\mu}, so f∝Tf \propto \sqrt T for a fixed wire. A 4%4\% rise in tension gives f′=f1.04≈1.0198ff' = f\sqrt{1.04} \approx 1.0198f, i.e. a rise of about 2%2\% (half the fractional change in TT). The beat frequency is f′−f≈0.02f=4 Hzf' - f \approx 0.02f = 4\ \mathrm{Hz}, hence f≈200 Hzf \approx 200\ \mathrm{Hz} (exactly 202 Hz202\ \mathrm{Hz}). A common slip is to take the fractional change in frequency as 4%4\%, which gives 100 Hz100\ \mathrm{Hz}.
