Single correct option

The mean and standard deviation of 2020 observations are 1010 and 22 respectively. It is later found that one observation recorded as 88 was actually 1212. The correct variance is
  1. A. 44
  2. B. 3.963.96
  3. C. 4.044.04
  4. D. 3.843.84
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 3.963.96

Wrong data: ∑x=20×10=200\sum x=20\times10=200 and ∑x2=20(σ2+xˉ2)=20(4+100)=2080\sum x^2=20(\sigma^2+\bar x^2)=20(4+100)=2080. Correct the data: ∑x=200−8+12=204\sum x=200-8+12=204, so the new mean is 10.210.2; ∑x2=2080−64+144=2160\sum x^2=2080-64+144=2160. Then the variance is 216020−(10.2)2=108−104.04=3.96\dfrac{2160}{20}-(10.2)^2=108-104.04=3.96. Note that the variance changes even though only one value changed, because both the mean and the mean of squares move. Answer: 3.963.96.
