Single correct option

The variance of the first nn odd natural numbers 1,3,5,…,(2n−1)1,3,5,\dots,(2n-1) is 1616. Then nn equals
  1. A. 55
  2. B. 77
  3. C. 99
  4. D. 1111
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 77

The numbers are 2k−12k-1 for k=1,…,nk=1,\dots,n, an affine function of 1,2,…,n1,2,\dots,n. Variance is unaffected by shifting and scales by the square of the multiplier, so it equals 4×Var(1,…,n)=4⋅n2−112=n2−134\times\mathrm{Var}(1,\dots,n)=4\cdot\dfrac{n^2-1}{12}=\dfrac{n^2-1}{3}. Setting this to 1616 gives n2=49n^2=49, so n=7n=7. Check: for 1,3,…,131,3,\dots,13 the mean is 77 and the mean of squares is 4557=65\tfrac{455}{7}=65, giving variance 65−49=1665-49=16.
