Single correct option

Tangents PAPA and PBPB are drawn from P(0,10)P(0,10) to the circle x2+y2=25x^2+y^2=25, touching it at AA and BB. The area of triangle PABPAB is
  1. A. 25325\sqrt3
  2. B. 7534\dfrac{75\sqrt3}{4}
  3. C. 7532\dfrac{75\sqrt3}{2}
  4. D. 2532\dfrac{25\sqrt3}{2}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 7534\dfrac{75\sqrt3}{4}

With centre OO at the origin, OP=10OP=10 and the tangent length is PA=100−25=53PA=\sqrt{100-25}=5\sqrt3. The chord of contact ABAB is perpendicular to OPOP and is y=2510=2.5y=\dfrac{25}{10}=2.5, so its distance from PP is 10−2.5=7.510-2.5=7.5. Half of ABAB is 25−2.52=532\sqrt{25-2.5^2}=\dfrac{5\sqrt3}{2}, so AB=53AB=5\sqrt3. The area of triangle PABPAB is 12⋅53⋅7.5=7534\dfrac12\cdot5\sqrt3\cdot7.5=\dfrac{75\sqrt3}{4}. The kite OAPBOAPB has area 25325\sqrt3, which is the tempting wrong choice. As a check, the kite OAPBOAPB (area 25325\sqrt3) is split by ABAB into triangle PABPAB and triangle OABOAB of area 12⋅53⋅2.5=2534\dfrac12\cdot5\sqrt3\cdot2.5=\dfrac{25\sqrt3}4, and indeed 7534+2534=253\dfrac{75\sqrt3}4+\dfrac{25\sqrt3}4=25\sqrt3.
