Single correct option

A Carnot engine has an efficiency of 40%40\%. When the temperature of its source is raised by 100 K100\ \mathrm{K} keeping the sink temperature unchanged, the efficiency becomes 50%50\%. The temperature of the sink is
  1. A. 250 K250\ \mathrm{K}
  2. B. 300 K300\ \mathrm{K}
  3. C. 400 K400\ \mathrm{K}
  4. D. 500 K500\ \mathrm{K}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 300 K300\ \mathrm{K}

Let the source and sink temperatures be T1T_1 and T2T_2. Efficiency η=1−T2/T1\eta = 1 - T_2/T_1. First case: T2=0.6 T1T_2 = 0.6\,T_1. Second case: T2=0.5 (T1+100)T_2 = 0.5\,(T_1+100). Equating, 0.6 T1=0.5 T1+500.6\,T_1 = 0.5\,T_1 + 50, so T1=500 KT_1 = 500\ \mathrm{K} and T2=0.6×500=300 KT_2 = 0.6\times500 = 300\ \mathrm{K}. The value 500 K500\ \mathrm{K} is the original source temperature and 400 K400\ \mathrm{K} results from using the raised source with the wrong ratio.
