Single correct option

One mole of a diatomic ideal gas (rigid molecules) undergoes a process in which its pressure is directly proportional to its volume. The fraction of the heat absorbed that is converted into work done by the gas is
  1. A. 14\dfrac14
  2. B. 13\dfrac13
  3. C. 17\dfrac17
  4. D. 16\dfrac16
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 16\dfrac16

For P=aVP=aV, W=∫P dV=a2(V22−V12)=12(P2V2−P1V1)=12R ΔTW=\int P\,dV=\tfrac a2(V_2^2-V_1^2)=\tfrac12(P_2V_2-P_1V_1)=\tfrac12R\,\Delta T. Also ΔU=CVΔT=52R ΔT\Delta U=C_V\Delta T=\tfrac52R\,\Delta T. So Q=ΔU+W=3R ΔTQ=\Delta U+W=3R\,\Delta T (molar heat capacity CV+R/2=3RC_V+R/2=3R). Hence W/Q=R/23R=16W/Q=\dfrac{R/2}{3R}=\dfrac16. Using W=RΔTW=R\Delta T (isobaric) would wrongly give 27\tfrac27.
