Single correct option

Let a⃗,b⃗\vec a,\vec b be unit vectors inclined at an angle of 60∘60^\circ. The volume of the parallelepiped whose coterminous edges are a⃗\vec a, b⃗\vec b and a⃗×b⃗\vec a\times\vec b is
  1. A. 32\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2}
  2. B. 12\dfrac12
  3. C. 34\dfrac34
  4. D. 32\dfrac32
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 34\dfrac34

The volume is the modulus of the scalar triple product: V=∣[a⃗  b⃗  a⃗×b⃗]∣=∣(a⃗×b⃗)⋅(a⃗×b⃗)∣=∣a⃗×b⃗∣2,V=\big|[\vec a\ \ \vec b\ \ \vec a\times\vec b]\big|=\big|(\vec a\times\vec b)\cdot(\vec a\times\vec b)\big|=|\vec a\times\vec b|^2, because [a⃗ b⃗ c⃗]=c⃗⋅(a⃗×b⃗)[\vec a\,\vec b\,\vec c]=\vec c\cdot(\vec a\times\vec b) with c⃗=a⃗×b⃗\vec c=\vec a\times\vec b. Now ∣a⃗×b⃗∣=∣a⃗∣∣b⃗∣sin⁡60∘=32|\vec a\times\vec b|=|\vec a||\vec b|\sin60^\circ=\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2}, hence V=34V=\dfrac34. The value 32\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2} is only the area of the base parallelogram.
