Single correct option

At 27∘C27^\circ\mathrm{C} the fundamental frequency of a pipe closed at one end is exactly 200 Hz200\ \mathrm{Hz}. The pipe is then filled with air at 159∘C159^\circ\mathrm{C}. If a tuning fork of frequency 200 Hz200\ \mathrm{Hz} is sounded together with the fundamental of the pipe at this temperature, the number of beats per second is (neglect end correction and expansion of the pipe)
  1. A. 4040
  2. B. 2020
  3. C. 8888
  4. D. 120120
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 4040

Speed of sound v∝Tv \propto \sqrt{T} with TT in kelvin: T1=300 KT_1 = 300\ \mathrm{K} and T2=432 KT_2 = 432\ \mathrm{K}. For a fixed pipe length f∝vf \propto v, so f2=200432/300=2001.44=240 Hzf_2 = 200\sqrt{432/300} = 200\sqrt{1.44} = 240\ \mathrm{Hz}. Beats =240−200=40 s−1= 240 - 200 = 40\ \mathrm{s^{-1}}. Taking f∝Tf \propto T (not T\sqrt T) would give 288 Hz288\ \mathrm{Hz} and 8888 beats.
