Single correct option

In a Young's double-slit experiment the slits are 1.0 mm1.0\ \mathrm{mm} apart and the screen is 1.0 m1.0\ \mathrm{m} away. The whole apparatus is immersed in a liquid of refractive index 4/34/3. A thin transparent sheet of thickness 6 μm6\ \mu\mathrm{m} and refractive index 1.51.5 is then placed in front of one slit. The central bright fringe is displaced by
  1. A. 0.75 mm0.75\ \mathrm{mm} away from the covered slit
  2. B. 0.75 mm0.75\ \mathrm{mm} towards the covered slit
  3. C. 3.0 mm3.0\ \mathrm{mm} towards the covered slit
  4. D. 2.25 mm2.25\ \mathrm{mm} towards the covered slit
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 0.75 mm0.75\ \mathrm{mm} towards the covered slit

The sheet adds an extra optical path (μs−μℓ)t(\mu_s-\mu_\ell)t in the beam through it, where the surroundings have index μℓ=4/3\mu_\ell=4/3. The central fringe moves to the side where the optical path is otherwise shorter, i.e. towards the covered slit, until the geometric path difference in the liquid compensates: μℓ d yD=(μs−μℓ)t\mu_\ell\,\dfrac{d\,y}{D}=(\mu_s-\mu_\ell)t. So y=Dd(μsμℓ−1)t=110−3(98−1)6×10−6=0.75 mmy=\dfrac{D}{d}\left(\dfrac{\mu_s}{\mu_\ell}-1\right)t=\dfrac{1}{10^{-3}}\left(\dfrac{9}{8}-1\right)6\times10^{-6}=0.75\ \mathrm{mm}. With the sheet in air (μℓ=1\mu_\ell=1) the shift would be 3 mm3\ \mathrm{mm}.
