Single correct option

In a Young's double-slit experiment with light of wavelength 500 nm500\ \mathrm{nm}, a thin transparent sheet of refractive index 1.51.5 and thickness 8 μm8\ \mu\mathrm{m} covers one slit, and another sheet of refractive index 1.41.4 and thickness 5 μm5\ \mu\mathrm{m} covers the other slit. The central bright fringe shifts by
  1. A. 44 fringe widths, towards the slit covered by the μ=1.4\mu=1.4 sheet
  2. B. 44 fringe widths, towards the slit covered by the μ=1.5\mu=1.5 sheet
  3. C. 1212 fringe widths, towards the slit covered by the μ=1.5\mu=1.5 sheet
  4. D. 1010 fringe widths, towards the slit covered by the μ=1.5\mu=1.5 sheet
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 44 fringe widths, towards the slit covered by the μ=1.5\mu=1.5 sheet

A sheet adds an extra optical path (μ−1)t(\mu-1)t. For the first sheet: 0.5×8000 nm=4000 nm0.5\times8000\ \mathrm{nm} = 4000\ \mathrm{nm}; for the second: 0.4×5000 nm=2000 nm0.4\times5000\ \mathrm{nm} = 2000\ \mathrm{nm}. The sheets are on opposite slits, so the net path difference is 4000−2000=2000 nm4000-2000 = 2000\ \mathrm{nm}. The number of fringes shifted is 2000500=4\dfrac{2000}{500} = 4. The zero-path-difference point moves toward the slit with the larger added optical path, i.e. the one covered by the μ=1.5\mu=1.5 sheet. Adding the two paths (giving 1212) ignores that they oppose.
