Single correct option

A uniform chain of length LL and mass MM lies on a smooth horizontal table with one quarter of its length hanging over the edge over the smooth edge. It is released from rest. The speed of the chain at the instant its last link leaves the table is
  1. A. gL\sqrt{gL}
  2. B. 14gL\dfrac{1}{4}\sqrt{gL}
  3. C. 15gL32\sqrt{\dfrac{15gL}{32}}
  4. D. 1415gL\dfrac{1}{4}\sqrt{15gL}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 1415gL\dfrac{1}{4}\sqrt{15gL}

Take the table level as zero of potential energy. When a length xx hangs, the hanging part has mass Mx/LMx/L with its centre of mass at depth x/2x/2, so U(x)=−Mgx22LU(x)=-\dfrac{Mgx^2}{2L}. Initially x=L/4x=L/4: Ui=−MgL32U_i=-\dfrac{MgL}{32}. Finally x=Lx=L: Uf=−MgL2U_f=-\dfrac{MgL}{2}. Energy conservation: 12Mv2=MgL(12−132)=1532MgL\tfrac12Mv^2=MgL\left(\tfrac12-\tfrac1{32}\right)=\tfrac{15}{32}MgL, hence v2=15gL16v^2=\dfrac{15gL}{16} and v=1415gLv=\dfrac14\sqrt{15gL}. Forgetting the factor 12\tfrac12 in kinetic energy gives the second option.
