The points A(1,2,3), B(3,5,4) and C(5,8,λ) are collinear if λ equals

Single correct option

The points A(1,2,3)A(1,2,3), B(3,5,4)B(3,5,4) and C(5,8,λ)C(5,8,\lambda) are collinear if λ\lambda equals
  1. A. 55
  2. B. 44
  3. C. 66
  4. D. 33
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 55

AB⃗=(2,3,1)\vec{AB}=(2,3,1) and AC⃗=(4,6,λ−3)\vec{AC}=(4,6,\lambda-3). For collinearity AC⃗=2AB⃗\vec{AC}=2\vec{AB}, so λ−3=2\lambda-3=2 and λ=5\lambda=5. Trap: λ=6\lambda=6 equals 2×32\times3 and forgets to subtract the zz-coordinate of AA, and λ=4\lambda=4 copies the zz-coordinate of BB.
