The greatest value of (1)/(x^2-4x+7) for real x is

Single correct option

The greatest value of 1x2−4x+7\dfrac{1}{x^2-4x+7} for real xx is
  1. A. 17\dfrac17
  2. B. 14\dfrac14
  3. C. 13\dfrac13
  4. D. 33
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 13\dfrac13

The denominator is x2−4x+7=(x−2)2+3≥3x^2-4x+7=(x-2)^2+3\ge3, with minimum 33 at x=2x=2. The reciprocal of a positive quantity is largest when the quantity is smallest, so the greatest value is 13\dfrac13. The value 17\dfrac17 is the value at x=0x=0, and 33 is the minimum of the denominator, not of the fraction. The fraction is always positive, so no larger value occurs for any real xx.
