Single correct option
The gas commonly used to fill ordinary electric bulbs is
- A. oxygen
- B. hydrogen
- C. argon
- D. chlorine
Show answer and solution
Answer: (C) argon
Argon is an inert gas that does not react with the hot tungsten filament, which therefore lasts longer without burning. Oxygen would make the filament burn out, hydrogen is flammable and chlorine is corrosive and reactive. Often a little nitrogen is mixed with argon. Helium is another inert gas but is not the usual choice.
