The circle x^2+y^2-4x-6y+9=0 touches

Single correct option

The circle x2+y2−4x−6y+9=0x^2+y^2-4x-6y+9=0 touches
  1. A. the xx-axis only
  2. B. both axes
  3. C. the yy-axis only
  4. D. neither axis
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) the yy-axis only

The centre is (2,3)(2,3) and r2=4+9−9=4r^2=4+9-9=4, so r=2r=2. The distance of the centre from the yy-axis is 22, equal to rr, so the circle touches the yy-axis. Its distance from the xx-axis is 3>23>2, so it does not touch the xx-axis. The two distances must be compared with the radius separately.
