The smallest positive integer n for which ((1+i)/(√2))^n=1 is

Single correct option

The smallest positive integer nn for which (1+i2)n=1\left(\dfrac{1+i}{\sqrt2}\right)^n=1 is
  1. A. 4
  2. B. 2
  3. C. 16
  4. D. 8
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 8

1+i2=cos⁡π4+isin⁡π4\frac{1+i}{\sqrt2}=\cos\frac\pi4+i\sin\frac\pi4, so the nnth power is cos⁡nπ4+isin⁡nπ4\cos\frac{n\pi}4+i\sin\frac{n\pi}4. It equals 1 when nπ4\frac{n\pi}4 is a multiple of 2π2\pi, i.e. n=8n=8. n=4n=4 gives −1-1.
