∫2^5(√ x)/(√ x+√(7-x)) dx is equal to

Single correct option

∫25xx+7−x dx\displaystyle\int_2^5\dfrac{\sqrt x}{\sqrt x+\sqrt{7-x}}\,dx is equal to
  1. A. 33
  2. B. 32\dfrac32
  3. C. 52\dfrac52
  4. D. 72\dfrac72
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 32\dfrac32

Use ∫abf(x) dx=∫abf(a+b−x) dx\displaystyle\int_a^bf(x)\,dx=\int_a^bf(a+b-x)\,dx with a+b=7a+b=7. The integral II then equals the same integral with numerator 7−x\sqrt{7-x}. Adding the two forms, 2I=∫251 dx=32I=\displaystyle\int_2^51\,dx=3, so I=32I=\dfrac32. The value 33 is 2I2I, the usual trap of stopping after the addition, and 72\dfrac72 is a+b2\dfrac{a+b}{2} rather than b−a2\dfrac{b-a}{2}.
