The order and degree of the differential equation y=xdy/dx+√(1+(dy/dx)^2 are respectively

Single correct option

The order and degree of the differential equation y=xdydx+1+(dydx)2y=x\frac{dy}{dx}+\sqrt{1+\left(\frac{dy}{dx}\right)^2} are respectively
  1. A. 11 and 11
  2. B. 11 and 22
  3. C. 22 and 11
  4. D. 11 and 12\frac12
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 11 and 22

Isolate the radical and square: (y−xdydx)2=1+(dydx)2\left(y-x\frac{dy}{dx}\right)^2=1+\left(\frac{dy}{dx}\right)^2. The highest derivative is the first, appearing to the power 2 once the radical is removed, so the order is 1 and the degree is 2. The fractional power 12\frac12 is not a valid degree.
