Single correct option

In a food chain, grass -> grasshopper -> frog -> snake, if the grass has 10000 J of energy available, the energy available to the snake according to the 10 per cent law is
  1. A. 100 J
  2. B. 10 J
  3. C. 1 J
  4. D. 1000 J
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 10 J

Energy passes by about 10 per cent at each step. Grass (10000 J) gives 1000 J to the grasshopper, 100 J to the frog and 10 J to the snake. Counting the first step as the producer level and not applying three transfers gives the other options. The snake is at the fourth trophic level.
