A galvanometer is converted into an ammeter by connecting a low resistance in parallel with it. 2. A galvanometer is converted into a voltmeter by…

Single correct option

Consider the following statements:
1. A galvanometer is converted into an ammeter by connecting a low resistance in parallel with it.
2. A galvanometer is converted into a voltmeter by connecting a high resistance in series with it.
Which of the statements is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Both 1 and 2

An ammeter must pass most of the current through a shunt, so a small resistance is connected in parallel with the galvanometer; statement 1 is correct. A voltmeter must draw very little current and so needs a large series resistance to limit current at high voltage; statement 2 is also correct. Swapping parallel and series is the common error.
