Single correct option

From two points AA and BB on level ground, in line with the foot of a tower and on the same side of it, with AB=40AB=40 m (AA farther), the angles of elevation of the top are 30∘30^\circ and 60∘60^\circ respectively. The height of the tower is
  1. A. 2020 m
  2. B. 4040 m
  3. C. 20320\sqrt3 m
  4. D. 40340\sqrt3 m
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 20320\sqrt3 m

Let the height be hh. Then hcot⁡30∘−hcot⁡60∘=40h\cot30^\circ-h\cot60^\circ=40, i.e. h(3−13)=2h3=40h(\sqrt3-\frac1{\sqrt3})=\frac{2h}{\sqrt3}=40, so h=203h=20\sqrt3 m. Writing ABAB as the sum rather than the difference of the distances gives a wrong value.
