Single correct option

In the reaction Fe + CuSO4 -> FeSO4 + Cu, the species that gets reduced is
  1. A. Fe atom
  2. B. Cu2+ ion
  3. C. SO4 2- ion
  4. D. FeSO4
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Cu2+ ion

Iron loses two electrons and is oxidised to Fe2+, while Cu2+ gains two electrons to become copper metal, so Cu2+ is reduced. The sulphate ion is a spectator ion. The reaction occurs because iron is more reactive than copper, and the blue colour of the solution fades to green.
